What generative engine optimisation is, and why it matters

Generative engine optimisation is the work of structuring and presenting your information so that AI systems can find it, understand it, and describe your organisation accurately when someone asks. It is a newer discipline, and one we apply to our own site as well as our clients'.
What changed
For two decades, being found meant ranking in a list of links. Increasingly, people ask an assistant a question and read a synthesised answer instead. In that model your organisation is not a link to be clicked. It is an entity to be described, and the description is assembled from whatever the system can read and reconcile.
If your information is inconsistent, buried in images, or scattered across pages that contradict each other, the description will be wrong. Nobody will tell you it is wrong.
What the work involves
It overlaps with technical SEO but it is not the same thing. In practice it means clean semantic markup so machines can tell a heading from a caption, structured data describing the organisation, its services, its people and its location, consistent naming across every page and every external profile, plain factual statements of what you do and who you serve, and content that answers real questions directly rather than circling them.
It also means restraint. Keyword stuffing degrades a synthesised answer as surely as it degrades a search ranking.
Why it matters now
Search optimisation and generative optimisation are converging, and the underlying requirement for both is the same: information that is accurate, structured and easy to read. That has always been the right way to build a site. It is now also the difference between being described correctly and being described badly.
